🎃 Why Do We Celebrate Halloween?

The origins of Halloween go back over 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated across Ireland, Scotland, and parts of northern Europe. Samhain marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter, when it was believed the veil between the living and spirit worlds was at its thinnest. Bonfires, costumes, and offerings were used to protect against wandering spirits.

From Samhain to Halloween

The origins of Halloween go back over 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated across Ireland, Scotland, and parts of northern Europe. Samhain marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter, when it was believed the veil between the living and spirit worlds was at its thinnest. Bonfires, costumes, and offerings were used to protect against wandering spirits.

The UK’s Role in Shaping Halloween

With the arrival of Christianity, Samhain merged with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, giving us “All Hallows’ Eve” — later shortened to Halloween. Medieval traditions like “souling,” where children asked for food in exchange for prayers, were early versions of today’s trick-or-treating.

In Britain, pumpkins didn’t appear until much later; our ancestors carved turnip lanterns instead. Games like apple-bobbing and telling ghost stories by candlelight became part of the seasonal fun, long before Halloween crossed the Atlantic and returned with an American twist.

From Folklore to Family Fun

Today, Halloween in the UK is a celebration of creativity, community, and fun. Dressing up, playing games, and sharing spooky treats are all part of keeping those traditions alive - and our Halloween Discotaculars are the perfect way to join in.

Conclusion

So, whether you’re polishing your witch’s hat, practising your monster moves, or just after a night of family fun, the Halloween Discotaculars at Little Monkeys in Hull are the place to be this October. We’ll see you on the dance floor… if you dare!
